I'm no knee-jerk Israel defender, but I can't resist mentioning Andrew's response to Linda McQuaig's piece on the CUPE/Israel tempest in a teapot:
Do we as Canadians support Israel’s policy of giving preferential rights to members of one religion? Clearly, we wouldn’t pass laws like that in Canada.Clearly not. Instead,we put preferential religious rights directly in the constitution.
Snap! Note to Linda: Have a look. Section VI, Clause 93 on Education. The word "Catholic" is mentioned 3 times... And we're not talking about my musical taste. My partner is still confused when she votes in a municipal election in Ontario (Hailing from BC). Not like I'm an expert, but we go over the deal to protect Catholic education rights in Ontario every time we need to say which school board trustee we're deciding to vote for.
